Barcelona management to ensure stay of defensive veteran next season – reports

While the La Liga season enters its final stretch, Barcelona is already strategizing for the 2024-2025 campaign. Squad shake-up is inevitable, with decisions already made on some players and others awaiting market developments.

One player who is facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou is Inigo Martinez, who joined the club on a free transfer last summer.

Martinez has endured a mixed campaign at Barça and many have speculated that he may be allowed to move on in the coming summer.

Inigo Martinez to stay at Barcelona?

However, a recent report from Mundo Deportivo refutes these suggestions, even going the opposite direction and claim that Barcelona are, in fact, counting on Inigo Martinez for the season ahead.

As per the report, Xavi Hernandez views Martinez as a crucial part of the backline, not just for his defensive skills but also for his leadership in the locker room.

His experience, personality, technical ability, and long-ball distribution are all valued assets. Xavi sees Martinez as a perfect mentor for the young gun Pau Cubarsi, offering guidance and protection on the pitch.

Barcelona has already informed Martinez of his continued role at the club. He signed a two-year deal last summer, and Fair Play regulations are not expected to hinder his place in the squad.

This news comes amidst significant uncertainty surrounding the futures of other central defenders. Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo have attracted interest from major clubs, and Barcelona might be willing to listen to offers for a significant transfer fee.

Andreas Christensen’s impressive form has also drawn attention, and the club might be open to a sale to generate funds.

The prolonged stay of Martinez, therefore, could prove to be critical as Barcelona look to go through major transformations in the defensive department.
