Barcelona will not launch the offensive to sign 24-year-old Spanish full-back Sergi Cardona from UD Las Palmas in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Sergi Cardona is no longer the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are in the market for a left-back heading into the summer transfer window. But they have cooled their interest in the 24-year-old UD Las Palmas full-back.
Who is Sergi Cardona?
Sergi Cardona spent his formative years outside the spotlight, going under the radar as he spent his youth career with Gimnastic de Tarragona. A native of Lloret de Mar, the Spaniard turned out for Pobla Mafumet and Gimnastic de Tarragona in the early years of his time as a professional footballer. But his fortunes have transformed since joining UD Las Palmas in September 2020.
The 24-year-old has been one of the best full-backs in La Liga this season, playing his part in Las Palmas having the chance to qualify for Europe. He has turned out 29 times thus far this term, chipping in with one goal and two assists. Meanwhile, Cardona’s progress at UD Las Palmas has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs.
Barcelona Calling?
Recent reports have heavily linked Barcelona with Cardona. The Blaugrana might delve into the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Marcos Alonso.
Alonso’s departure will create the need for a versatile defender who is primarily a left-back but can play at the heart of the defence. Nevertheless, Sergi Cardona emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with the Blaugrana previously considering a summer move for the 24-year-old Spanish full-back.
However, the reigning La Liga champions have walked away from a move for the Spaniard. They are concentrating on other targets, although the report does not mention any specific targets for Barcelona.
