Barcelona prodigy’s absence from national team squad explained by manager

Vitor Roque has endured a difficult time since joining Barcelona at the start of the year. His adaption has been slow, with the forward failing to become a first-team regular for Xavi Hernandez’s men.

Since arriving in Catalonia, Roque has participated in nine matches, totalling just over 200 minutes of league action. However, the forward has started in only one league game.

Roque has fallen behind the likes of Joao Felix, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha in the pecking order. His place in the team is set to dwindle further following the return of Ferran Torres from injury.

In light of Roque’s slow progress at Barcelona, he was not called up to the Brazilian squad during the international break.

Brazil coach on snubbing Roque

Heading into an international friendly against Spain this evening, Brazil coach Dorival Junior was asked why Vitor Roque was not a part of the setup.

In response, Dorival Junior suggested that the forward is going through his adaptation process at Barcelona and reaffirming that CBF see him as a player for the future.

“He is in a moment of adaptation, like Vinícius and Rodrygo. And he cannot be rushed. We have to see his evolution until he reaches the 2026 World Cup, we have to accompany him and not harass him,” he told the media (h/t SPORT).

The road ahead for Roque

Given his slow progress at Barcelona, Vitor Roque is unlikely to be taken into consideration for the upcoming Copa America.

But this could serve as a boon for the former Athletico Paranaense starlet, as it will allow him to focus on the pre-season campaign with Barcelona.

With Lewandowski facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou, Roque will have the opportunity to become a key player in the years to come.

The coming summer, therefore, could be crucial as the Brazilian looks to speed up his adaptation and make a solid impression on the new coach.
